SERMON SERIES – January 1 – January 29, 2012

January 1, 2012
Sermon Title: "Mystery, Memory, and Mission in Mary"
Scripture: Luke 1:39-56
Theme: Mary enters into the mystery of who God is in a unique way as the one chosen to bear and birth the Son of God. She also remembers the story of her people in a unique way, serving as the physical link between the Old Testament covenants and that of the New Testament, namely Christ Himself. Finally, she participates in God's mission in a unique way, as her faithful obedience to the word of the Lord allows God's plan of salvation for the whole world to continue unfolding.

Sermon Title: "Mystery: God in the Christ"
Scripture: Hebrews 1:1-4; John 1:14-18
Theme: Who is God? It is the mystery of mysteries, the most important question we can ever ask, or to which we can ever seek an answer. But part of this mystery of God's nature is that the answer to it has come seeking us. In Christ God comes to near to us. In Christ God reveals Himself to us. He reveals His heart, His name, His nature, and His life to us and His creation. In seeking the mystery, we need look no further than Christ, for in Him God is with us and among us, at work to draw us back into His heart and life, to teach us who He is and how to live because of it.

Sermon Title: "Memory: God in the Church"
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:16—6:2
Theme: What's our story as the Church? God has entrusted to the Church the very work of reconciliation He gave to His Son. The ministry of Christ has been given to the Church, God's set-apart people. Since they have been reconciled to God in Christ, they have been given the ministry of reconciliation by Christ. Since in Christ God was reconciling all the world to Himself, so now through the Church God is still reconciling all the world to Himself. By the Spirit of Jesus, the Church bears the very presence of God in the world for the sake of the world. Jesus' name is Immanuel—"God with us"—and so the Church which now bears His cross in the world is a new Immanuel for the sake of the world. The Church is the new incarnation of "God with us." As Jesus served others, so the Church now serves them, living to bless the world in and with the love of God. The Church now carries on the story of the God who has revealed Himself in Christ.

Sermon Title: "Mission: God in the Creation"
Scripture: Isaiah 11:6-9
Theme: What was God doing in the Christ? And what is God doing in the Church? He is not only reconciling a people to Himself, but is reconciling a whole creation to Himself. The creation that fell when humanity sinned against God; the creation that has felt and lived with the terrible effects of humanity's sin; the creation that groans for its redemption—God came in Christ to remake and redeem this very creation. The Church stands on the front lines of this redeeming work, helping to make the fallen creation the new creation it already is in Christ. The Church's mission is to make of the creation by the power of the Spirit an offering to God, so that in its entirety it becomes a place of worship, fellowship, and communion in and with Christ. God's plan doesn't just include humanity being saved, but the whole creation being saved. This is the mission of the Church here and now. As God poured Himself out in Christ, and pours Himself out on the Church, so through the Church God longs to pour Himself out onto the whole creation. The work of the Church is to be used by the Spirit to this end, till the whole world becomes love as God is love and has already made the Church love He is in Christ by the Spirit. As such, the Church bears witness to the peaceable Kingdom of God here and now, making peace between everyone and everything in the whole creation.

Sermon Title: "The Missional Church"
Scripture: 1 Peter 2:1-10
Theme: The missional church is the one which grows up into a spiritual house and royal priesthood. It is one which continually deepens its understanding of who God is--mystery. It is one which continually remembers who it is in Christ and what it's been called to in Him—memory. It is one which continually participates in God's ministry of reconciling all the world to Himself as it is empowered to by the Spirit—mission. The missional church, therefore, exists to serve the world, exists not for its own sake but for the sake of others, dying to itself so that others might live, and renouncing itself so that it can truly follow in the poor humble way of Jesus. The missional church is the one which dies with Him in co-crucifixion, which is emptied of self as Christ emptied Himself, and which gives itself away to others, again following the example of God in Christ. The missional church will suffer much to be missional, but all this suffering it counts as unworthy of comparison against the joys of loving and serving others into the peaceable Kingdom of God. The missional church will be hated by the world, and yet it will win the world over to God by loving it as He loves it. The Church so loves the world as God so loves the world, and so the Church gives itself to the world as God gives Himself to it in Christ. This is the identity, work, and hope of the missional church.

SERMON SERIES – February 5 – April 8, 2012

Sunday, February 5. Sermon Title: "Oasis"…Scripture: John 7:37-39…Proper Biblical stewardship recognizes that God desires us to have proper pleasure so that we do not seek pleasure improperly and so that we will joyfully share the good gifts He sends our way.

Sunday, February 12. Sermon Title: "Love My Fender. Love It True"…Scripture: Matthew 6:25-34…Proper Biblical stewardship accepts the pleasures God gives and receives them according to His will. This includes sharing with others—not out of obligation or guilt but from gratitude and joy.

Sunday, February 19. Sermon Title: "The Pleasure Sandwich"…Scripture: Deuteronomy 8:7-19. Come worship the Lord Who has provided us with a Pleasure Sandwich to teach us the balance needed for proper Biblical Stewardship.

Sunday, February 26. Sermon Title: "The Fourth M"…Mark 9:15…This is the first in the Lenten series—the Paradoxical Lenten Journey. On this first Sunday of Lent, we will pick up the themes introduced during Advent and the Stewardship series while giving a different light on the fourth "M"—metanioa, which is Greek for "repentance." Repentance is a word that calls us to both pleasure and passion (pain).

Sunday, March 4. Sermon Title: "The Wonderful Cross"…Text: Mark 8:31-38…That a cross could become the instrument of a life of joy is one of the most paradoxical mysteries of all! By faith, we can live in the mystery!

Sunday, March 11. Sermon Title: "Upset? Or Set Up?" Text: John 2:13-22…When God moves in our lives it is often upsetting, but if we will respond in faith and obedience He will really be "setting us UP!"

Sunday, March 18. Sermon Title: "Resident, Redemptive Aliens". Text: John 3:14-21…Perhaps the most radical repentance necessary in the Lenten journey is that we are called to follow a Savior Who is not ours alone, but for all! And we are to do it in a way that resembles aliens inhabiting a strange land while loving its inhabitants.

Sunday, March 25. Sermon Title: "Beyond the Dark Side". Text: John 12:20-33…Together with Jesus, we are invited to move beyond the Dark Side. His Love and Life will move us there.

Sunday, April 1. Sermon Title: "Great Reversal…Great Rehearsal". Text: Mark 1:1-11. The Great Reversal we see in the Triumphal entry is the one we are called to live out in this life. But, paradoxically it is a Great Rehearsal for the blessings of the Eternal Life of God—now and forever!

Sunday, April 8. EASTER SUNDAY. Sermon Title: "VICTORY!" Text: John 20:1-23. One of the earliest expressions of the Atonement was the "Christus Victor" motif…CHRIST IS THE VICTOR! Perhaps we need to recapture that emphasis in our hearts and lives today!
